What are the Analects of Confucius and their explanations?

1. The superior man understands what is right;the inferior man understands what will sell.
  • The superior man is has the right understanding. He understands what is right and what is wrong.. The inferior man, on the other hand, only understands what can make him rich...

2. The superior man loves his soul; the inferior man loves his property.
  • The superior man loves his life more than his things. The inferior man treasures his things more than his life.

3. The superior man blames himself; the inferior man blames others.
  • The superior man knows what mistakes he has done and take the blame while the inferior man passes on the blame to others.

4. To know what you know, and know what you do not know is the character of one who knows.
  • If you can admit that you don't know something then you know yourself better... rather than to fool yourself pretending you know everything. OR It kind of means to be wise you know the difference between what you DO know, and what you do NOT know.
The character of the wise person (or one who knows) is to know the difference.

5. Do not worry about people not knowing you, but strive to worth knowing.
  • Don't stress it if you're not well known or you don't have a lot of friends, but try to be someone that people will WANT to know and be friends with.

6. A man who has committed a mistake and does not correct it committing another mistake.
  • Any person that makes an error and doesn't try to fix it is going to have a bigger error

7. Reading without thinking gives one disorderly mind; thinking without reading makes one flighty.
  • In my Opinion, The first statement means that if you don't think about what you read, the ideas of what you just read are just floating through your mind and you can't organize your thoughts properly.
If you think but you do not "read", meaning you are not informed, then you are thinking without a basis and you probably don't even recognize whatever it is that you're thinking about.
    Flighty (adjective)

8. When a country is in order, it is a shame to be a poor and common man:
  • Well, why not? A country that is ruled properly does not hinder one's success.  Being poor in a nice and orderly country reflects one's lack of capability to rise for himself and work hard. it symbolizes one's incompetence.
When a country is in chaos, it is a shame to be rich and an official:
  • Being rich and an official in a chaotic country means that YOU are one of the reasons as to why the country becamse chaoitc in the first place.  it means that you, the rich and powerful, were not able to use your gifts for the country to prosper.  Again, it symblizes one's incompetence; or probably, greed for too much money and power that resulted to one's forgetting of his/her own duties to the country and its people.
9. To repay evil with kindness is a sign of a generous character; to repay kindness with evil is the sign of a criminal.
  • Let's make an example I gave him a good thing, generousity and trust to him but he's just pretending to be my best friend when he's away from me he have a bad side, he's just using me.

10. A man who has a beautiful soul always has some beautiful things to say, but a man who says beautiful things does not necessarily have a beautiful soul.
  • People with positive attitude and good action always say beautiful things but it doesn't mean all who say good stuff are honest people.
